Mysterious Giving, I Love It!

I have heard in the news and John and Jeff Radio Show about mysterious, anonymous giving and it tickles me pink!  They are not worried about recognition or even a tax deduction receipt.  I do not recall where these happened, but I love the stories and hope to be one of these givers someday.  I get all choked up :).
  • People putting $1000 into random Salvation Army buckets.
  • A guy standing on a busy street corner handing out hundred dollar bills to people walking by.  I think he spent 6 figures!  (He was smart and had a police officer with him).
  • A lady who went into a K-Mart and paid off thousands of dollars of strangers's layaway items that contained toys.
This one's not mysterious, but heartwarming nonetheless.  A small town police station in Texas - the officers went to the local schools and stopped people with stellar driving/car records.  They rewarded them with gift cards for their good behavior.  Nice treat in this day and age where we so often only hear about the bad.

I am certain that there are more stories out there.  These are the ones I can recall without Googling :).

Beautiful, Shiny John Lennon Quotes

  •  “When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.”
  • “Love is like a precious plant. You can't just accept it and leave it in the cupboard or just think it's going to get on by itself. You've got to keep on watering it. You've got to really look after it and nurture it.”
  •  “Count your age by friends, not years. Count your life by smiles, not tears.”
  • “Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans.”
  • “Time you enjoy wasting, was not wasted.”
  • “Love is like a flower-you've got to let it grow.”
  • “There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love. When we are afraid, we pull back from life. When we are in love, we open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance. We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections. If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create. Evolution and all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.”
  • “You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. I hope someday you'll join us. And the world will live as one.”
  • “It's weird not to be weird.”
  • “I'm not going to change the way I look or the way I feel to conform to anything. I've always been a freak. So I've been a freak all my life and I have to live with that, you know. I'm one of those people.”
  • “When you're drowning you don't think, "I would be incredibly pleased if someone would notice I'm drowning and come and rescue me." You just scream.”
  • “Love is a promise, love is a souvenir, once given never forgotten, never let it disappear.”

My Friend is Dying

One of my best friends is in the hospital right now dying of terminal cancer.  I just got done visiting her.  I love her very much.  God can take her any day now.  I wish I could take Shawn Farrell from 4400 and have him heal her.

Movie Review: In Time: Disappointing

A+ for the concept, creativity, originality.
A for the cast.
B for the characters.
C for the one dimensional stuff.
F for the ending.

When I saw the previews for this movie I was beside myself.  I was all over it and so excited.  Definitely down my alley.

When I saw the movie I was disappointed.   I'm one who places a lot of value on the ending.  A movie can be stellar but if the ending does not do justice then forget it, it loses points in my review.  *sticks tongue out*.

I am intrigued by the idea of rich, poor, social issues, perspective, attitudes, heart aches, tough times.  The movie did an okay job at this, but could have done better.  I will not say anything more about it due to my pledge of not giving spoilers.

I still loved the concept that time is the currency.  I loved the cast too.  Justin Timberlake, despite his former card carrying horrid boy band membership, has actually turned out to be pretty cool.  And Cillian Murphy - what an interesting person!  Methinks it is his eyes and chin.  Though I would have liked to seen more out of his character.

You Can Make an Impact!

I do not know who wrote this, but what an amazing, uplifting story!  It came to me in an email forward in 2009 - I removed the part about sending it to "10 people or else" because that is just annoying and stupid.  Anyway, here is a wonderful story that is important to share with the world.  Do reach out to people because you never know the impact!

--

One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class who was walking home from school.  His name was Kyle.  It looked like he was carrying all of his books.  I thought to myself, 'Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?  He must really be a nerd.'

I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.  As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.  They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.  His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.  He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes.  My heart went out to him.  So, I jogged over to him as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.

As I handed him his glasses, I said, 'Those guys are jerks.  They really should get lives.'

He looked at me and said, 'Hey thanks!'  There was a big smile on his face.  It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.

I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.  As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before..  He said he had gone to private school before now.  I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.  We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.  He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.

I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.  He said yes.  We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.

Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.  I stopped him and said, 'Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!'  He just laughed and handed me half the books.

Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.  When we were seniors we began to think about college.  Kyle decided on Georgetown and I was going to Duke.  I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.  He was going to be a doctor and I was going for business on a football scholarship.

Kyle was valedictorian of our class.  I teased him all the time about being a nerd.  He had to prepare a speech for graduation.  I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak.

On Graduation day, I saw Kyle.  He looked great.  He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.  He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.  He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.  Boy, sometimes I was jealous!  Today was one of those days.  I could see that he was nervous about his speech.

So, I smacked him on the back and said, 'Hey, big guy, you'll be great!'  He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.

'Thanks,' he said.

As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began: 'Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.  Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends....  I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.  I am going to tell you a story.'

I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told story of the first day we met.  He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.  He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.  He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.  'Thankfully, I was saved.  My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable..'

I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.  I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.  Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.

Never underestimate the power of your actions.  With one small gesture you can change a person's life.  For better or for worse.  God puts us all in each others lives to impact one another in some way.  'Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly.'  There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.  Tomorrow is a mystery.  Today is a gift.

Make an Effort / Guard Your Heart

Got this from  my friend Jim.  Not sure where he got it, I am sure it has been floating around the web.  Great though, I love it, makes you think.

Movie Review: Killer Elite: Obscure

A+ for fight scenes and action.
A+ for period/era correct items and setting (1980).
B for dark, cunning plot.
B for characters.
C for obscurity.

The plot was pretty obscure and a bit hard to follow.  A little intimidating to imagine stuff like that happens in real life.  I don't doubt it and I can totally appreciate that this was based on a non fiction book and a true story.  The dark sides of life that it covers is somewhat scary yet very intriguing.

Jason Statham is one of my favorite actors.  Any movie can be a complete flop but if you put him in it there's still saving grace and I'll definitely watch it just because he's in it.  Not only that but he's hot :).  Clive Owen, Robert De Niro, Dominic Purcell, Aden Young, Yvonne Strahovski (chick from Chuck.  Yes she really is Australian, schweet accent) - very nice cast.

Aside from the underdogs saving the day type of scenario, I really enjoyed that they were true to 1980.  The glasses, the hair, the cars, the big phones, no cells, no computers, people using pen and paper.  My how times have changed.

Movie Review: Source Code

A+ for how it handled time and reality.
A+ for attention to detail and reflections.
A for the intriguing, clever, tickle me pink plot.
B for the ending.

A train explosion in Chicago. That's about all I can say without giving anything away. I'm partial to movies like this. Very nostalgic for me, I'm just a huge fan of sci fi and time type of movies. Love it, love it! Very Deja Vu, Quantum Leap, the Jacket, Groundhogs Day, Unstoppable, Fringe, Sound of Thunder. Woot :)

Attitude Quote

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a school... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one thing we have, and that is our attitude... I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.” ---Charles Swindoll

Funnyman, Actor, Doctor (Really) Ken Jeong

One of my all time favorite actors is Ken Jeong, best known for his role on the Hangover 1 & 2. He's also a father, a husband, a doctor, a comedian, has twin girls, and his wife is a cancer survivor. As a matter of fact, during her initial battle with cancer, he declined being in the Hangover 1, but his wife insisted and encouraged him to do it. So he did. It was his therapy, cast members and laughter helped him through tough times. Thank God for people like Ken Jeong who remind us that it is okay to be different, find humor in all aspects of life, appreciate uniqueness, and to follow your goals and dreams. Kudos to his refreshing interview on Ellen Degeneres. Here is his Facebook page. /tilts hat to Ken Jeong.

Movie Review: Kung Fu Panda 2

A+ for pandas.
A+ for cute humor.

This movie really needs no introduction. I mean, the fact that it involves pandas automatically gives it an A+, then the plot, the cast, the fun adds to it. ;)

Movie Review: Zombieland

A+ for quality quips.
A+ for the cast, including Bill Murray. "This guy has a direct line to my funny bone."
A+ for not going by regular names, rather by cities for names. And the Twinkies thing, even though I don't like Twinkies.
C for blood. Makes me queezy.

Rule #32: Enjoy the little things.

A new world begins in this comedy about 4 humans who survive a zombie over take. I tell ya, I love zombie movies! Especially comedic ones (think Sean of the Dead - gotta love Simon Pegg). If I could, I would plunk one quotation mark at the beginning and another at the end because this movie is full of fabulous lines that make me smile and laugh.

Rule #Gleenobly: watch this quirky, delightful movie, not for children.

Movie Review: Star Trek from 2009

A+ for the plot & action.
A+ for the cast.
A+ for the twists & turns.
A+ for the humor.

Star Trek from 2009. Not much to say other than an ultra high level of cool. Love the cast, the shift in the story line, the way James T Kirk went above and beyond despite resistance and adversity, classic underdog triumphant wax poetic. What a lesson for us all. "Dang it Jim, I'm a doctor not a physicist!" Love this line, I use it as a substitution for "oops" or "sh!t" and often replace the word physicist for escalator or any other chosen word applicable to the situation at hand. As with Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and anything JJ Abrams, who can go wrong with Star Trek?

Movie Review: Little Fockers

A for humor & mishaps.
A for the cast.
C for the exaggerated.
F for the ridiculous.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of the Focker franchise. I just think that it gets old after a while; the first one was the best out of all of them. Eccentricity was a bit over the top, (save for a spread eagle valley girl character played by Jessica Alba) but it was still hilarious and I always love the cast :).

Movie Review: Knight and Day

A for humorous misunderstandings.
B for stunts.
C for lame plot.
F for Tom Cruise.

In the spirit of Much Ado About Nothing and The Man Who Knew Too Little, we have Knight and Day. It's about a girl who gets caught up in this crazy weard investigation. The above mentioned movies were much better, though, and a lot funnier. There were funny parts, it was more like one liners or certain scenes, but as a cohesive movie - meh. Not so much. Too trite. Cool stunts, though.

I like Cameron Diaz. She's cute, funny, and spunky. Not a fan of Tom Cruise. I'm sure he is a nice man, but he's just never been one of my favorites. Bit over the top for me.

Fringe Season Finale

Love it! Much better than Anna Torv trying to "impersonate" Leonard Nimoy! Can't wait for Fringe to come back.

IMDB: Fringe.

Fox: Fringe.

Movie Review: Fast 5

A+ for the bank safe scene.
A+ for the cast
A for stunts.
B for cute, funny quips.
D for over the top stuff.

The glory of movies and the reason I am such a huge film buff is because of stories like Fast 5. Over the top? Yes! Ridiculous? Yes! Humor where I didn't laugh out loud but laughed on the inside? You betcha. But you know what? Doesn't matter in movies like this. I mean, who can beat awesome cars, awesome cast, super schweet stunts, and OMG that bank safe scene! I can honestly say I have never seen that before and I absolutely loved it, I was all over it! (Save for Dodge Chargers - huh? LOL, it was still cool).

I am also a huge fan of the Fast series. I am not going to give anything away, but I will say that the very last scene I was quite skeptical, but hey, like I said - gotta love the movies anyway. And Dwayne Johnson, Paul Walker, Vin Diesel - ahhhh I just wanna hug them and squeeze them and call them George.

When I think of the movies I enjoy and love, I think of the 2001 movie called the Majestic. My favorite line - I pulled this from IMDB.com:
[Inside the abandoned movie theater]
"Harry Trimble: That's why we call it The Majestic. Any man, woman, child could buy their ticket, walk right in. Here they'd be, here we'd be. "Yes sir, yes ma'am. Enjoy the show." And in they'd come entering a palace, like in a dream, like in heaven. Maybe you had worries and problems out there, but once you came through those doors, they didn't matter anymore. And you know why? Chaplin, that's why. And Keaton and Lloyd. Garbo, Gable, and Lombard, and Jimmy Stewart and Jimmy Cagney. Fred and Ginger. They were gods. And they lived up there. That was Olympus. Would you remember if I told you how lucky we felt just to be here? To have the privilege of watching them. I mean, this television thing. Why would you want to stay at home and watch a little box? Because it's convenient? Because you don't have to get dressed up, because you could just sit there? I mean, how can you call that entertainment, alone in your living room? Where's the other people? Where's the audience? Where's the magic? I'll tell you, in a place like this, the magic is all around you. The trick is to see it."

Donkey Lesson

The Donkey Lesson

Author unknown

One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do.

Finally he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey. He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well.

At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement, he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well, and was astonished at what he saw.

With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off!

Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping stone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up!

Remember these five simple rules to be happy:
1. Free your heart from hatred.
2. Free your mind from worries.
3. Live simply.
4. Give more.
5. Expect less.

Now, enough of that crap.

The donkey later came back and kicked the shit out of the farmer who tried to bury him.

Moral: When you try to cover your ass, it always comes back to get you.

Movie Review: Next 3 Days

A+ for eerie darkness.
A+ for the cast.
B for the plot.
D for diabolical shiveries.

So what do you do in the face of danger? What do you do when your options are low and good enough isn't good enough? Possible answers exist in this movie about a family whose life takes a turn for the worst when the mother gets charged for murder. I'm loving the level of darkness and suspense. Really makes you question life, the good and bad things that happen to you, and how you handle it.

The movie left me feeling mostly satisfied. Though, still.. felt a little empty. Like still dealing with the aftermath of how to really take in what I just witnessed. All-in-all, it is rare for me to not be able to guess the ending, so that's a plus for the movie makers. I wouldn't mind seeing an alternate ending. And I would love to see a sequel. Gain closure and more positivity.

I love the cast. I cannot think of a single Russell Crowe movie that I do not like, except for maybe Beautiful Mind. Elizabeth Banks - not her typical role, she did a great job though. She's one of my favorite actresses. I also enjoyed seeing Liam Neeson & Olivia Wilde and that d00d Michael from Jericho, and the guy from Ultimate Gift.

This movie reminds me of the McStay family (they went missing in California a year or 2 ago). And all the other people who have to go through tough situations such as this in real life. I pray that they can all receive the justice they deserve.

Now go see a comedy after you watch this movie. You'll need it.

Movie Review: Thor

A+ for fantasy, sci fi, action.
A+ for the cast.
A for family, friend dynamics.
B for humor.
C for the love story.
D for the cheesy aspect.

I love it when people kick butt and take names. And the dichotomy between modern society and mythical / other universe - fabulous! It's a beautiful thing folks, much like mixing rap & Somewhere Over the Rainbow - or that movie coming out this summer called Cowboys and Aliens. Tickles me fancy. And the cast! Schweet! Kat Dennings, I picked up on her right away, can't miss it - the gal from Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist!

At any rate, Thor. Back to it. One of my favorite stories. Loved the family and friend dynamics and the conflict. Love story was a bit too much for me and there were some cheesy parts, but over all a pretty good story with cute humor.

"Take it back! Take back what you said about Thor!" a line from one of my favorite movies Adventures in Babysitting.

Cool Quote From TV Show 4400

"The end of one journey is always the beginning of another. Change is painful and always comes with a cost. It hurts to bear those costs, but we can't allow that to sway us. Tomorrow is a mystery. The only thing we can do is face it with resolve. We move forward, always forward and into what's next. We make a choice - we act upon that choice. And all that's left is to live in hope." ~Jordan Collier, episode Fifty Fifty, original air date 08/27/06

Movie Review: Peaceful Warrior

A+ for insight & inspiration & following your dreams no matter what.
A+ for the cast, especially Nick Nolte.
C for somewhat flat plot.
D for predictability.

Okay so don't get me wrong, I enjoy movies based on true stories.
Dan Millman - I mean, what an amazing life he has lived and impressive things he has done. Successful gymnast, gets hurt, can't do it, gets told he can't do it, does it anyway, surprises everyone, teaches us that happiness comes from within, be true to yourself, believe, and know that life is about the journey and not the destination. Love it.

From a cynical gag me perspective, I could have done without the wax poetic philosophy pez dispenser shaped fortune cookie that spits out fortune cookie fortunes instead of candy. No, don't think "huh?" Just take a moment to think about that.

Then go see the movie anyway :). Meow.

Movie Review: Due Date

A+ for dark humor.
A+ for the coffee can.
B for the monkey.
C for over all feeling.

What a refreshing, twisted, comedic story! Yes, the movie is not for everyone. I can see how people wouldn't like it. However, I liked it. Has some flavor of What About Bob? - one of my favorite movies. So this man is trying to make it to the birth of his son - needs to travel from Atlanta to LA with limited time on hand. Ends up needing to pair up with a wacky d00d. They are complete opposites, yet strangely they need each other - they help each other to realize that being different isn't so bad and being perfect is over rated, they can make it through their demons/baggage, and, most importantly, they can forgive and love life.

It was pretty hilarious and touching too in a dark, bizarre way. I could have done without some predictability and my over all feeling made my literal headache worse, but I did enjoy the movie.

I'm not into coffee but that whole thing was f*$&#%( funny!

Teeth

One time I saw my dentist at the store. He said hello, so I said hi too and told him how my teeth were doing.
